Slippery elm is an herb that can be used to treat diarrhea. You can purchase it inexpensively in bulk at Community Pharmacy and Quintessence, both in Madison.
Add one rounded teaspoon of slippery elm powder to one cup of cold water in a small saucepan and mix well. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly so it does not burn. Turn down the heat and simmer for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently, until the mixture has thickened slightly. Add one tablespoon of honey (for dogs only – cats don’t like sweets so leave it out). Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature, then administer every 4-6 hours until symptoms abate.
Cats and small dogs: ½ -1 teaspoon
Medium dogs: 1-2 tablespoons
Large dogs: 3-4 tablespoons
